Sr. Sara Proctor, DW talks about her ministry among migrant workers with Council of Catholic Women
Daughters of Wisdom, Sr. Lucy Clynes and Sr. Sara Proctor, worked together in a joint mission to share information with the Council of Catholic Women from St. Paul’s Parish in Jacksonville Beach and Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida at their annual Celebrating Women in Service to the Church Epiphany gathering.
The focus was on the ministry of Sr. Sara Proctor, DW and the Medical Services she manages under the umbrella of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Florida. Sr. Sara provides free services at three walk-in clinic sites serving San Jose Mission, Dover, Fl; St. Clement Catholic Church, Plant City; Our Lady of Guadalupe, Wimauma; Bethel Mission, and Good Samaritan Mission.
As many of the patients Sr. Sara sees are migrant workers, she began her presentation with a walk down the produce aisle in a grocery store, asking participants to name what fruits and vegetables are grown without the assistance of migrant field workers. Sr. Lucy said, “The discovery that there are very few demonstrated the need we all have to support and protect these workers.”
Sr. Sara also shared some statistics about the health and safety challenges of these workers, especially children. Sr. Lucy commented, “Many hearts and heads were touched. The current situation in our country and our focus on ‘a wall’ puts the lives of these workers in jeopardy.”
Sr. Lucy encouraged participants to check out NCCW.org and become involved in projects in their parishes that provide outreach to women and children, care of the poor and marginalized, and concern about the growing sin of the Human Trafficking crisis.
