As we publish this new issue of the International Wisdom Bulletin, dedicated to the inauguration in our Entities of the Jubilee of Hope called for by Pope Francis, we are moving along the Lenten journey towards the celebration of the mystery of Easter, the mystery that is the foundation of Christian hope. What a wonderful coincidence the liturgical calendar offers us!
The Easter Sequence, which we will read in our churches during the Eucharist on Easter Sunday, tells us in poetic words of the struggle at the heart of the Paschal Mystery:
Death with life contended:
combat strangely ended!
Life’s own Champion, slain,
yet lives to reign.
And a little further on, it puts a very beautiful dialogue into the mouth of Mary Magdalene. It culminates in a magnificent profession of faith :
Christ, my hope, has risen:
He goes before you into Galilee
Yes, before the extraordinary joy of Easter breaks out, there is indeed the struggle between life, Christ, and death, the evil that is in us and around us. Mary Magdalene, sad and in mourning after the violent death of Jesus, shows us how her great love for him opens a path of hope and acceptance of the resurrection. Her great love for Jesus leads her to the tomb to pay homage to him. There she is the first to receive the good news of the Resurrection and becomes an apostle of the apostles. The hymn she sang recalled the miracles she had witnessed and expressed her great joy: her love and hope were revived.
The celebration of the Jubilee of Hope invites us, in our own concrete circumstances and those of the world today, to turn our eyes to the One who is our love and our hope, the Risen One.
This Jubilee year invites us to renew our faith in the triumph of life, despite all that surrounds us which leads us to despair…
