Who Are We : General Chapter

VIDEO - UNDER THE SIGN OF HOPE

At the invitation of the General Council, a group of younger Sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of Wisdom had the joy to meet each other in Paris. Coming from different Entities of the Congregation: Canada, United-States, France, Great Britain and Ireland, India, Indonesia, Italy, Madagascar, Malawi, Maria Luisa, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, DR. Congo and Haiti, we reflected and shared together our thoughts for the next Chapter.

Each of us were able to express herself freely from a questionnaire prepared by the members of the General Council and given to each Entity in advance. We spoke on the reality of our Entities from the themes of interculturality, from our position as members of the Congregation today and in the future. It was a rewarding experience where each Sister could share her joys and difficulties.

THE DAUGHTERS OF WISDOM CELEBRATE

Communication Chapter

In the afternoon of August 24, after revisiting the orientation of the General Chapter, Fr Luiz Augusto Stephani, General Superior and the forty-four delegates extend to the new General Council a special prayer and blessing. This beautiful gesture of communion and love proves to be a foretaste of the following celebrations.

The very next day, the Eucharistic celebration gathers the other members of the Montfort Fathers’ General Council, Fr Wismick Jean Charles, Fr Marco Pasinato, Fr Rozario Menezes, Fr Arnoldus Suhard and the General Secretary Fr Balaswamy and also Br John Kallarackal, Superior General of the Brothers of St Gabriel, two general councilors, Br. Pratap Reddy and Br. James T.K. and Br. Christian Bizon, Provincial councilor of France. The Montfortian Family is well represented on this solemn day when Sr. Louise Madore and the former General Council displays  the theme of their mandate “Widen the space of your tent” as they welcome the new General Council  mandated to live out for the next six years the theme “Love without borders”. Sr. Louise revives a tradition dear to our Congregation as she unveils a cloth containing the embroidered name of each Congregational Leader since Mother Marie Louise of Jesus. The name of Sr Rani Kurian, the thirty-second Congregational Leader, is embroidered on a new cloth. After the commitment of the new General Council, in a spirit of communion and co-responsibility for the whole of the Congregation, all the delegates pronounce their own commitment. Numerous wishes, congratulations and thanksgiving are then offered by each Superior General who pledge to a greater collaboration among the three Congregations.

Montfort and Marie-Louise are certainly in jubilation on this blessed day. Having widened the space of our tent, with a renewed spirit, we feel empowered to love without borders.

Communication Chapter

On August 23, the new General Council of the Daughters of Wisdom was elected after a few days of prayer, discernment and serious sharing as the Congregation writes a new chapter of its sacred story. Who are they? Sr. Rani Kurian, India, Congregationall Leader, Sr. Isabelle Retailleau, France, Sr Marie-Reine Gauthier, Canada, Sr Antonella Prestia, Italy, and Sr Pierrette Bwamba, DR of Congo will lead, guide and help the Congregation to journey under the loving gaze of Mary, Montfort and Marie-Louise of Jesus.

Sr Antonella Prestia, Sr Isabelle Retailleau, Sr. Rani Kurian , Sr Pierrette Bwamba et Sr Marie-Reine Gauthier

International, energetic, eager to bring forth life and hope, this new Council will incite the sisters to live the Gospel of joy from the communities to the peripheries of our world seeking happiness, love and food for the body and soul. During their six-year mandate, the General Council will encourage the sisters to make concrete steps towards interculturality and reconfiguration, by inviting  us to get more involve and to live in harmony among us and  with the whole Creation.

INTERCULTURALITY FOR MISSION

Communication Chapter

Two days with Maureen Gilbert united us closer together, like what we see at the end of a fairy tale!

Born in England and living now in Ireland, a Jew, an anthropologist, a facilitator for all types of groups in many countries, she immediately won our hearts by her simplicity, competence, energy and attention to the others; no wonder her middle name is “Flexibility”! Personal reflections and group sharing, dialogues, revisiting our family meals, the role of parents and acquired values, conversations on power and leadership, sharing intercultural experiences brought us to offer to the Congregation and to the whole universe the richness of our cultures, of our people and families, of what we have received and even of our dreams. The session ended with a grand finale, a jewish psalm presented by Maureen and Bríd. It immediately turned into a dance uniting all participants in prayer and thanksgiving.

But there was an evening between these two days, a marvelous intercultural night gathering in joy and solidarity the newly formed entities, a night bursting with creativity, colors, dances, songs, love of one another.

“Love without borders”? For sure, we can!

FINANCES FOR MISSION

Communication Chapter

Mr Paul Boisvert, the Congregation’s financial consultant, shared on his company Fidare and on the actuarial situation of the congregation comprising a vision of the future regarding the demographic and financial situation and some reflections on the future. Let us continue what was well done, remain attentive to each entity and have a listening heart to hear the new mission needs.

Our General Treasurer followed up on the demographic and financial situation and functioning of the congregation and then came up with some recommendations. Skillfully and with contagious energy, S Ruth Dary covered the 2012-2017 history of the congregation’s financial administration taken up by the members of the General Team. Using the parable of the Good Samaritan, she invited us to see and to choose four principles for a good financial administration and, why not, for sharing our personal gifts: solidarity, fraternity, unity and responsibility.

Indeed, we are called to administer with wisdom all the  gifts we have received for the common good and this involves the whole universe.

CULTURAL OUTING ON THE COAST OF BRITTANY

Communication Chapter

The cloudy skies did not dishearten us, pilgrims dreaming to see the pink granite coasts. Jean-Marc, our bus driver for the day, brings us to Perros-Guirec pier where we embark for the Seven Islands Archipelago.

Like high tide, our large group of fifty persons invaded the boat with our joyful spirits. Unique site in France, the Seven Islands Archipelago is where twenty-seven different types of birds meet to reproduce at different times during the year. That rainy morning we saw gannets and cormorants. The crew guide offered interesting and ample information on gannets that live on the archipelago from February to October.

The boat now aims towards the pink granite coasts. We discover a splendid scenery through the fog that slowly disperses. The formation of these coasts dates back to three hundred million years and its base much earlier, possibly six hundred million to two billion years, assuredly the oldest rocks in France. The pink color of the granite is the result of a high level of pinkish feldspath.

PHOTO #1,2,3

Back on solid ground, after a much appreciated lunch, we then greet Corine, our guide for the next two hours as we explore the environment embellished with pink granite. Jean-Marc skillfully sways the bus in the narrow streets so that we can marvel at the beautiful scenery while Corine shares with us interesting comments in French and English. Through her information, we get to know elements of the culture of Brittany. Later, a short stop finds us at Ploumac’h in front of a beach where formerly rested a little fishing village. We take a small trail in order to admire the panorama.

After thanking and leaving Corine at Perros-Guirec, we head back home our eyes filled with pink stars on a grey background.

CANON LAW FOR LIFE

Communication Chapter

While preparing for the General Chapter 2018 all the delegates received a 69-page document from Fr Morrisey, OMI to read. It is common knowledge that some canonists have the reputation of being stern, difficult to approach, intransigent but what a surprise to meet our speaker, a wise, kind, caring and competent man with a sense of humor and an incredible memory. In spite of themes seemingly dry and heavy, our expert gently guided us throughout these three days, on the path of canonical questions for our reflexion on reconfiguration of the Congregation.

Overwhelmingly satisfied, all expressed that it was truly a grace to work with this simple, humble man with a vast international experience who only wants to love God hidden in his neighbor!

Communication Chapter

On the seventh day, the delegates, after attentive listening and shared reflections in intercultural groups, celebrated the golden jubilee of Sr Louise. Sisters from each entity had prepared and offered a presentation revealing the richness of each culture.   We indeed had a lot of joy in celebrating our differences. Thank you,

Sr Louise for these 50 years of fidelity to Christ Wisdom and for your generous service to the Congregation.

JOURNEY 2012-2018

STATE OF THE CONGREGATION: 2012-2018

Communication Chapter

“Widen the space of your tent…”, biblical reference dear to our hearts! This is how Sr. Louise Madore, General Superior, started the General Council’s report from 2012. Yes, Wisdom is indeed the liberating force that sends us to the crossroads of our intercultural world and invites all our sisters and brothers to eternal happiness.

In spite of sickness, changes, lack of personnel and multitasking experienced by the General Council, it made concrete steps to implement the Orientations of the General Chapter 2012. Sr. Louise and the General Councilors, Sisters Rani, Isabelle and Elizabeth alternately and superbly presented under the following themes the enormous work accomplished:

  1. Implementation of the Orientations of the General Chapter 2012 (reconfiguration, Justice, Peace and Integration of Creation, interculturality, vocation awareness, formation)
  2.  Implementation of the Recommendations (international novitiates, formation, financial autonomy of the works, moving the General House from Rome to Paris, Friends of Wisdom)
  3. Implementation of the Decisions (new Rule of Life, official languages of the Congregation, becoming member of the international NGO UNANIMA)

They concluded with “Animation of the Congregation by the Leadership Team, Communication, collaboration with the Montfortian Family.” In the afternoon, Sr Josiane Legrand gave a presentation on the Website of the Congregation, clarified certain questions and solicited greater participation from the sisters and the entities.

Mrs Véronique Frinault, president of the international committee of the Friends of Wisdom shared with us in a creative way the evolution of the Friends of Wisdom and gave us an outlook on their previous, present and future projects, main events and activities. What joy and consolation to notice that Wisdom spirituality is alive and life-giving among the Friends of Wisdom and in the Church today. Let us continue our journey together towards unifying and transforming Wisdom.

In communion with the General Council, we are “quite content with the state that God has ordained for us”. We praise God for the marvels that Wisdom accomplished in the Congregation since 2012. During its mandate, the General Council manifested in so many ways to the entities and to each sister openness and availability, courage and love. Thanks to their much appreciated commitment, we feel strong and dream of the next six years with hope. The transforming presence of Wisdom and of our Founders empowers us to go and to love without borders.

I AM QUITE CONTENT…

Sr. Louise Madore D.W.
Congregational Leader

As we conclude the presentation of the fulfillment of our mission during this 6-year mandate in this year of the 25th anniversary of the Beatification of Marie Louise of Jesus, one sentence springs forth in our hearts:

I am quite content with the state that God has ordained for me.”

In her letter dated February 25, 1721, in spite of the precarious state she was in upon her arrival at St. Laurent, Marie Louise wrote this deep thought to her brother Julien. She stated that the only thing that mattered for her was to be aware that everything she was living allowed her to discover the constant presence of God in her life.

I am quite content… Such were the words that rose from our hearts at the end of this mandate. All that we lived, all the joy, hope and suffering as a Team was a gift of God, crossed and permeated by the presence of Wisdom.

I am quite content… Because we have been, more than once, touched by the effective collaboration of the Entity Leaders and their Council. We will not forget the progress made during our various meetings: Councils of Congregation, Entity Visits, commitment to reconfiguration paths, communications, etc. All this common work gave us the impetus and audacity to think outside the box and dare to create with you new ways for the future of the Congregation.

I am quite content… For we witnessed, at all levels, the unwavering participation of the members of the Congregation in the undertaking of major projects. With emotion, we often witnessed the generous availability of our Sisters for various international services accepted as normal requirements in their lives as Daughters of Wisdom. In the course of our visits, regardless the age of some Sisters, we saw everywhere the love of the poor and the lowly, in humble everyday life under difficult conditions and in challenging commitments against injustice. During our visits, we encountered on some of your faces, expressions of affection and on your lips, words of assurance of your prayers for our mission and for the Congregation. We always felt the prayerful and affectionate support of our senior Sisters during these past 6 years.

I am quite content…Aware that not everything was perfect and that you probably had to forgive some missteps… we thank you for your understanding and we count on the tenderness of God.

I am quite content… … For despite the various precarious situations we experience, the Congregation is and will always be called to reveal to the end the folly of love of Wisdom for humanity. But to do this, we must again open our hearts, be available, and dare undertake a path of conversion. Montfort tells us: “If you do not risk anything for God, you will never do anything great for Him.” With Marie-Louise, let us follow the ways of the folly of love of Wisdom leading us in a prophetic way, to "Love without borders."

FATHER SIMON-PIERRE ARNOLD IMPARTS TO US HIS WISDOM

Communication Chapter

At the beginning of this Chapter, we are happy to welcome Fr Simon-Pierre Arnold, Benedictine monk of Belgian origin, living in Peru since many years. He was in charge of a team of theologians of the Latin-American Conference of Religious. He was also director of a center of spirituality and of an institute for studies, research and publications on the andine culture, revealing his commitment to dialogue with cultures and religions.

As we invited Fr Arnold to help us to journey together, we proposed three guidelines to help us to reflect:

  • To better understand religious life in today’s context.
  • Help us revisit our vows and our option for Christ for a more radical commitment to mission in link with the theme of the Chapter “Love without borders!”
  • Help us revisit our option for Christ in line with our charism and spirituality missioning us to the poor.

Fr Arnold responded beyond our expectations as he filled his talks with personal experiences and such an ardent heart. Enlivened sharing from personal witnessing and insights often inspired by the life of Montfort and Marie-Louise followed around the tables and in the large group. Fr Arnold, a modern prophet, invites each one of us to live like a “wise woman who is an optimistic improviser who relies on her life experience to risk creating, doubting, and starting over again and again”. It is what our Founders were and did, their charism “residing in the mystical expression that flows from the passionate following of Jesus. ‘Love and do as you please’, said Saint Augustine.”

Titles of his talks:

  • Is there a future for Consecrated Life?
  • Come close to the source of living water.
  • “Buen Vivir” or Living Better?
  • Providence is the hands of the poor.
  • Wisdom and “Buen Vivir”: a project both old and new.

Thank you, Fr Arnold, for sharing your wisdom with us. It is now up to us to live a vision full of hope as disciple of Jesus for the world today.

Elements of Fr Simon-Pierre Arnold’s conferences can be found in his books.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 4 2018

It is a foggy day on the sea but that doesn’t affect our hearts.

Communication Chapter

The facilitator invites us to reflect and share our hopes for this General Chapter. A lively conversation between groups of various Entities allows delegates to learn about the particular situation and achievements since the last Chapter. The exchange ends with a "guided tour" of these Entities around their posters containing quantities of information. Mutual knowledge and appreciation of each other have gained ground today!

The day ends with joy and gratitude as Sr. Louise and the General Council distribute to each delegate a copy of the new edition of "The Love of Eternal Wisdom" in French as well as the book "Ecoute la Sagesse" which is a Lectio Divina of some biblical texts of the LEW. What an inestimable treasure for the Church and anyone who wishes to deepen the wisdom spirituality that Montfort has given us!

OPENING REMARKS

GENERAL CHAPTER 2018

Ile-Blanche, 3 August, 2018

Sr. Louise Madore D.W.
Congregational Leader

What a profound joy to welcome each one of you to live together this event so long awaited by the whole Congregation. This morning, I believe that many of us, like Mary at the Annunciation, could say, "How will this be ..." As we enter the Chapter, our hearts are filled with hope, of expectations but there is also perhaps uncertainty and fears ... But let us be without fear ... as the angel reassures Mary who was troubled, as Jesus reassures his distraught disciples after the Resurrection, "Do not be afraid" for we have received the promise of the presence of the Holy Spirit. We know that all our sisters, the elderly and those in formation, our brothers of St. Gabriel, the Montfortian missionaries and all our Friends of Wisdom are accompanying us with their prayers.

Let us believe in the presence of creative Wisdom that accompanies us: "Having then created everything, Eternal Wisdom, continues to “contain all, to sustain all, and to renew all. (Wisdom 1,7, ASE 32) Through the intercession of our founders," Wisdom will continue to work with us and teach us what pleases God.” Wisdom 9.10

The Lord entrusts to us, the delegates, an important and demanding mission that we will have to accomplish throughout the Chapter, which is to put ourselves individually and collectively under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to discern according to the heart of Wisdom.

There was the whole preparatory phase of the Chapter which continues to live within us. While the quality of preparation for the Chapter has been impressive and innovative, we owe much of it to the contribution of our facilitator and the preparatory committee. On behalf of the Congregation, I would like to thank our facilitator Sr. Bríd Long and the members of the committee, Srs Antonella del Cuore Immacolato, Mercy Kanyumbu, Maribel Ladino and Marie Turner, as well as the members of the General Team. Collaboration and participation have been excellent throughout our work.

All my gratitude also goes to all of you here present and to all the sisters of your Entities who have responded faithfully to all our requests by contributing to the richness and dynamism of this Chapter. Several sisters expressed their appreciation on reading the various letters received from the different Entities and for taking part in the general consultation for the constitution of the next General Council. Congratulations for the participation that demonstrates once more the spirit of belonging to a common body, the Congregation.

OPENING RITUAL

Sr. Louise Madore D.W.
Congregational Leader

Here we are gathered from all over the world to live the Chapter ... at the very beginning I invite you to listen carefully to the text of the Acts of the Apostles. Let's take the time to welcome this Word of God, let it deeply penetrate our heart and our spirit.

Calling Forth the Delegates

I will now call each delegate. When you hear your name, I invite you to give your answer which can be "Here I am" or an equivalent expression. Then I will give each one of you a heart. Throughout the Chapter, I ask you to keep this heart with you, it is both the symbol of the theme of the Chapter, "Love without borders" and an invitation to be collectively listening to Wisdom, to  discern together the invitations and conversions to which Wisdom will call us along the spiritual journey that we are undertaking together today.

GENERAL CHAPTER PREPARATION COMMITTEE

GENERAL CHAPTER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF WISDOM – 2018

Sr. Jacqueline Portefaix, DW
General Councilor

An international, intergenerational committee was appointed to prepare the Chapter.

It is composed of:

  • Sr. Marie Turner of the Delegation of Great-Britain and Ireland
  • Sr. Mercy Kanyumbu of the Delegation of Malawi
  • Sr. Antonella del Cuore Immaculato of the Province of Italy
  • Sr. Maribel Ladino of the Province of Colombia

This committee worked with the General Council and the Facilitator, Sr. Bríd Long ssl, in accordance with the objective of fostering broad and active participation of the entire Congregation. All of us are engaged in this movement which calls for an ever-greater availability for the mission.

This preparation is supported by a prayer for the Chapter that is common for all the Congregation.

Prayer for the General Chapter 2018

O Eternal and Incarnate Wisdom,
We entrust to you our next General Chapter
Send your Spirit of love on each of us
So that an ardent flame spread beyond the borders.
Mary, stay with us,
At this time when God calls us to open our hearts
Give us the availability to cross barriers
To bring down walls,
Help us to broaden our heart
To the dimensions of an intercultural world.

Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort and Blessed Marie-Louise,
You have taken a fresh look at the realities of your time,
Give us your boundless love
To go beyond the borders of our security,
Give us your deep desire to communicate Wisdom.
As free and faithful women, help us to look to the future,
To the forward thrust you gave us: the absolute certainty
That “God’s tenderness unfolds upon humanity.”  (R.L. Annex p.3).

Amen.

LOVE WITHOUT BORDERS

GENERAL CHAPTER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF WISDOM – 2018

Sr. Jacqueline Portefaix, DW
General Councilor

LOVE WITHOUT BORDERS
This is the theme of the forthcoming General Chapter of the Daughters of Wisdom.

A topical theme:

  • At a time when the world is traversed by so many waves of migrations in all countries,
  • At a time when we experience developing interculturality in our Congregation in order to be faithful to live our mission in accordance with our charism.

In August 2018, 45 delegates from 17 countries, on all continents, will meet in General Chapter. They will discern together how to live more intensely in the world today and weave human relationships showing that it is possible to love without borders like Wisdom.

This is the invitation that is addressed to us in the logo chosen for the Chapter: one heart both rooted in the world and open in a movement of love without borders!

Indeed, as representatives of the younger Sisters of the Congregation, we were expected to share our vision of the realities of religious life today. We hope that our contribution will shed light on the next General Chapter of the Daughters of Wisdom that will be held in France next August.

Our desire is to continue to offer the charism and spirituality of our founders, St. Louis Marie of Montfort and Blessed Marie Louise Trichet, in a love that knows no borders. Our meeting made possible, thanks to the Sisters of the General Council who graciously offered their skills for English and French translation.

We lift our hearts in prayer in order that Wisdom remain at the center of deliberations and decisions at this General Chapter.
